Rendering of Mural, Courtyard View

Mural represents the first residential phase of MacArthur Station. The family apartments will set the stage for adjacent future mixed-use development at MacArthur Station and establish a high threshold for quality and sustainability.

Mural is named after the iconic geometric murals within the MacArthur BART station as well Oakland’s rich tradition of mural art. The property itself will feature a locally commissioned mural in the front entryway.

Mural's design consists of a five-story residential structure over a single level, primarily below-grade, garage structure. The layout emphasizes pedestrian orientation and takes advantage of a natural slope to tuck the parking garage entry largely below grade at the furthest corner of the property. The site plan will serve to enhance pedestrian access between the surrounding neighborhood and the BART station by creating, for example, a new pedestrian walkway connection between Telegraph Avenue and the MacArthur Station sidewalk network.

The project features a contemporary look, including a series of individual apartment stoops activating the primary elevations, and provides a double-height entrance lobby with high glass walls offering welcoming views through to one of two internal courtyards. Amenities include shared laundry rooms, community lounge areas including a shared kitchen, and a large flexible community room for meetings and events. Shared laundry and event spaces are oriented alongside the main internal courtyard to enhance the connections between indoor and outdoor activities and allow parents, for example, to watch their children while doing laundry or participating in meetings indoors. A number of sustainable measures have been incorporated, such as bioswales to significantly reduce and filter storm water run-off, and solar thermal panels to support hot water pre-heating.
